Sarah-Ann Shaw/Maria L. Baldwin Scholarship Award Ceremony
On Saturday May 30, the League of Women for Community Service (LWCS) is awarding four soon-to-be high school graduates with the Sarah-Ann Shaw/Maria L. Baldwin Scholarship to help advance their education. The scholarship is named after two pioneering Boston-area women -- both past presidents of the League -- who represent a rich legacy of education, professional excellence and service to the community. For more information, contact Info@LWCSBoston.org.
Born in Roxbury, MA, in 1933, Sarah-Ann Shaw was a civil rights activist and journalist who served as a dedicated president and member of the LWCS. She was the first Black woman in broadcast television in Boston, working at WBZ-TV for 31 years. Maria L. Baldwin was born in 1856 in Cambridge, MA, and was the first Black woman appointed principal of an integrated public school in the northeast (formerly the Agassiz School, now the Maria L. Baldwin Elementary School in Cambridge). She was the first president of the LWCS.

Coretta Scott King’s 99th Birthday

As the country's 250th anniversary approaches, in collaboration with Embrace Boston and other community partners, Everyone 250 is building an inclusive vision of the City of Boston and ensuring the nation's diverse future. Come support! Blessedly, the occasion also marks an opportunity to celebrate the 99th birthday of the legendary Civil Rights icon Coretta Scott King who lived at the League’s headquarters in the early 1950’s while she was a student in Boston.
A reception will take place immediately after the ceremony a few doors down the street at the South End Historical Society at 532 Massachusetts Avenue.
