First League President

Maria Baldwin Portrait

Maria Baldwin, founder and first president of the League of Women for Community Service, was a noted educator, and the first African American in Massachusetts to be named Headmaster of a school. A famous author and much sought after speaker, she lectured throughout the country on women’s rights, anti-lynching, civil rights, poetry, and history. She was also a tutor to a number of students, including W.E. B. DuBois when he attended Harvard University.

“For a century the League of Women for Community Service has promoted equality and social justice in employment, education, housing, voting and public accommodations. We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement protesting racial violence perpetrated against us, and the killing of Black and Brown people by the police. We encourage everyone to get involved and organize. It has NEVER been more important!

Sarah-Ann Shaw, League President Emeritus
